The project focuses on the Cernazai Epigraphic Collection, housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Cividale del Friuli and consisting of inscribed monuments with texts in Greek and Latin, coming from different areas of Italy and Dalmatia. This lot was originally part of one of the most important collection of art and antiquities of the Italian 19th century, owned and gathered by the family Cernazai of Udine.
The project has scientific and didactic purposes, and is one of the activities of the Greek and Latin Epigraphy Laboratory. First of all, every monument must be recorded and studied in view of a comprehensive publication, which should be accessible both in the traditional paper form and as an open online database: the inscriptions are in fact a source of great historical interest for the information they provide and for the socio-economic factors they can point to. In addition to this, it is important to carry on extensive archive researches – a necessary step in order to reconstruct the complex events concerning the formation of the collection prior to its acquisition by the museum, events which involve other important European collections from the half of the 17th century
