I graduated in History at the University of Trieste (1986) under the guidance of Giovanni Miccoli. After that I got a Ph.D. in History of the Medieval Church and the Heretical Movements at the University of Padova, 7th Cycle (1995), with Antonio Rigon as tutor.
For some years (1992–1998) I worked as a school teacher of literary subjects, but at the same time I also achieved a post-doctoral fellowship at the École française de Rome (1995 and 1996), and I attended the National School of Medieval Studies at the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo (1998); later I became Researcher in Medieval History at the University Alma Mater of Bologna (1999). Since 2005 I am Associate Professor of Medieval History at the University of Udine.
I was director of the Biblioteca Umanistica e della Formazione (2011–2013) and Rector's delegate for Libraries and Databases (2013–2019).
My study activity goes from hagiographic subjects to various issues within the field of religious and institutional history (6th–16th century). I have always had particular interest in researching unpublished archival sources, through numerous editions.
I collaborated with the École française de Rome, with the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo, with the Associazione italiana per lo studio della santità dei cultu dell'agiografia (AISSCA). Moreover I am member of various other associations and institutions, such as the Società italiana degli storici medievisti, the Istituto di storia sociale e religiosa (Gorizia), the Istituto per le ricerche di storia sociale e religiosa (Vicenza), the Istituto per la storia della chiesa in Friuli "Pio Paschini" (Udine), the Società internazionale di studi francescani. I am corresponding partner of the Accademia udinese di scienze lettere e arti and member of the Deputazione di storia patria per il Friuli.
I direct the journal "Quaderni di storia religiosa medievale" (formerly "Quaderni di storia religiosa") and I am part of the direction board of "Cristianesimo nella storia". I am also member of the direction/editorial boards of the following journals: "Il Santo", "Memorie domenicane", "Studia Patavina", "Forum Iulii", "Ce fastu?", and in the past I collaborated with "Rivista di storia della Chiesa in Italia", "Reti medievali. Rivista", "Annali di storia delle Università italiane" as well. I am secretary of the series "Fonti per la storia della chiesa in Friuli – serie medievale" and I am part of the scientific advisory board of the series "Italia sacra".
I organized and participated to numerous conventions, seminars and national and international conferences. Including monographs, essays, articles, dictionary entries and reviews, I can count more than 170 publications.
