The Department of French and Italian at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications to our MA program in Italian. Our MA students receive a rich and multifaceted introduction to graduate studies in Italian, and leave our program with the tools and resources necessary to research, educate, continue to learn, and become practitioners in a variety of fields. Our program’s small size allows us to provide personalized mentoring and guidance, not to mention instruction in periods and sub-fields that range from the Middle Ages to the contemporary, and from performance and translation studies to geocriticism and ethnography. Visit our faculty profiles to learn more about us: Prof. James Coleman | Prof. Lorraine Denman | Prof. Lina Insana | Prof. Rachel Love | Prof. Chiara Montera

Qualified applicants are eligible to be admitted to our two-year program with a full financial support package in the form of a teaching assistantship that includes a stipend, full tuition scholarship, and comprehensive health insurance for the duration of the program. Once admitted, our TAs teach one Italian language course per term and participate in a rigorous teacher training program that features a full-semester pedagogy seminar as well as intensive program-long mentorship from Lorraine Denman, Italian Language Program Coordinator. Contact Prof. Lina Insana, Director of Graduate Studies in Italian, to learn more about graduate opportunities in Italian at Pitt.

Recent graduates of our MA program have succeeded in securing admission with generous funding at some of the best Italian PhD programs in the country, including Berkeley, Brown, Columbia, Duke, Indiana, Illinois, Johns Hopkins, Madison-Wisconsin, NYU, UCLA, U of Chicago, U of Oregon, U of Texas-Austin, Stanford, and Yale. Our graduates have gone on to hold faculty positions at universities across the US and Canada, as well as in public and private secondary schools. Other alumni of our program have forged successful and rewarding careers as teachers, curriculum developers, and study abroad professionals. Still others are applying their knowledge of Italian language and culture to government and industry.

Pittsburgh is a vibrant city that is increasingly attracting national attention as a great place to live, thanks to the city’s educational and cultural institutions, its burgeoning tech economy, and its attractively affordable cost of living.

We welcome American, Italian, and other international applicants. The priority deadline to apply for Fall 2025 admission is February 1, 2025. Further information on program guidelines and prerequisites and admissions guidelines, including the application itself, can be found on our website: www.frenchanditalian.pitt.edu.
