Bot Office
La stampa industriale cinematografica riletta dall’Intelligenza Artificiale
Responsabile scientifico: Simone Dotto

The project Bot Office tests generative Artificial Intelligence in reading historical journalistic sources. The initial data were drawn from a corpus of periodicals belonging to the Italian cinema trade press, representative of some of the major publications active in Italy between 1949 and 1976, already acquired by several public and private library-archival institutions.
Together with Giacomo Vidoni and in collaboration with the IT company Datamantix, several generative AI modules were trained to read and encode the information extracted from digitized journals and to build a conversational interface for user interaction.
Objectives
The concrete objective is to develop a user-friendly chatbot capable of providing historical knowledge about the Italian film industry, based on a controlled dataset and a selection of verified historical sources.
Results in the field of DH
By combining the application of text- and knowledge-based computational tools with the methodological perspectives of cultural history on the cinema and media industries, Bot Office aims to foster critical awareness both of digital methods and traditional sources. It provides an applied research context that encourages questioning AI systems not as an oracle, but as a “spokesperson” for historically situated sources.
