Il Barone di Nicastro di Ippolito Nievo.
Edizione digitale dei manoscritti autografi della Biblioteca Civica “V. Joppi” di Udine
Responsabile scientifico: Silvia Contarini

In continuity with the objectives of the PRIN 2017 project Nievo e la cultura letteraria del Risorgimento: contesti, paradigmi e riscritture (1850–1870), coordinated by Prof. Silvia Contarini, this project aims to study the editorial process of Il Barone di Nicastro, Nievo’s “satirical short novel” published in 1860 by the Sanvito press. In addition to the already known journal editions that anticipate the volume publication (Il Pungolo, 1857; Il Fuggilozio, 1859), the project also incorporates previously unpublished evidence in the form of autograph papers held at the Biblioteca Civica V. Joppi in Udine. The materials include manuscripts 2530 and 3941 of the library’s Fondo Principale, already described by Iginio De Luca, and manuscript 14.1.13 of the Fondo Nievo-Ciceri, recently catalogued by Sara Cerneaz during a research fellowship supervised by Prof. Silvia Contarini and funded by the FVG region, totalling 45 sheets. The different writing campaigns identifiable within these materials reveal a redactional phase of the text preceding the mentioned journal publications, which must be considered both in dialogue with the subsequent authorial rewritings and within the historical and political context in which the novel appeared, strongly influenced by the trial brought against the writer following the publication of the novella L’Avvocatino.
Objectives
The ultimate goal of the project is the creation of a digital edition according to scholarly criteria of the manuscripts held at the Joppi Library relating to Il Barone di Nicastro, to be published on the DIUM platform. In order to present the different phases of the text’s editorial and redactional history, a synoptic edition of the novel will be prepared, which will include, in addition to the manuscript texts, the versions from Il Pungolo (1857), Il Fuggilozio (1859), and the Sanvito edition (1860).
Results in the field of DH
The contribution of the Digital Humanities will allow the edition to host not only textual transcriptions but also high-resolution facsimile reproductions of the individual witnesses preserved at Joppi and available on the Fonte Gaia digital platform, thus providing the possibility of extending the comparison to the visual and material elements of the texts (including the complex iconographic apparatus of Il Pungolo).
