The project aims to create an online portal dedicated to the virtual reconstruction of two major Venetian humanistic libraries that were later dispersed: the fifteenth-century Greek-Latin library of Francesco and Ermolao Barbaro, and the sixteenth-century library of the Monastery of Sant’Antonio di Castello, which housed the Greek manuscripts collected by Cardinal Domenico Grimani, largely originating from the collection of Pico della Mirandola.
The reconstruction proceeds from the surviving inventories and documentation to the identification and confirmation of manuscripts still extant, providing a digital platform capable of virtually reassembling the collections, including their original physical configuration.
Objectives
- Complete the online publication of the section devoted to the Biblioteca Barbaro, with particular attention to the Greek manuscripts, while maintaining the portal as an open tool for future updates.
- Design and initiate research on the Grimani collection through the systematic gathering of documentation and the planning of the relevant section of the website.
- Provide, for each identified manuscript (whether securely or hypothetically attributed), standardized descriptive records including codicological data, historical contextualization, critical discussion, updated bibliography, and links to digitizations available online.
- Enable advanced database queries based on cross-searchable criteria (provenances, scribes, watermarks, bindings, stemmatic relationships, subsequent owners), in order to support research on the activities and intellectual networks involved in the formation and dispersal of the collections.
- Experiment with forms of virtual reconstruction of the libraries in their original material configuration.
Results in the field of DH
- Revision of the edition of the sixteenth-century copy of the inventory of the Biblioteca Barbaro (ms. Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. lat. 3436), published as a digital critical edition on the dedicated website.
- Preparation of cataloguing and historical records for manuscripts attributed to the Biblioteca Barbaro, currently preserved at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (18 manuscripts), Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (16 manuscripts), and Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III of Naples (10 manuscripts); collection of cataloguing data for manuscripts held at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan (5 manuscripts), the BnF in Paris (16 manuscripts), and the ÖNB in Vienna (10 manuscripts); survey of a further 18 codices preserved in other libraries in Italy and abroad.
- Direct examination or analysis through digital reproductions of the Vatican and Marciana manuscripts; retrieval of cataloguing data for the Neapolitan manuscripts from published inventories; systematic review of the bibliography relating to each manuscript.
- Implementation of a searchable digital infrastructure, with integrated records combining codicological description, historical data, and analytical tools aimed at reconstructing the cultural and intellectual dynamics of Venetian humanism.
