After completing my studies in Economics at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and participating in the MAE-CRUI program in Norway at the Italian Embassy in Oslo, I enrolled in the PhD program in Economic Geography at Sapienza University of Rome, where I earned my PhD in 2013. Since then, I have been active in research both in Italy and abroad, holding various academic positions. In particular, at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, from 2017 to 2018, I worked as a post-doctoral researcher on the SPLACH project (Spatial Planning for Change). I have also gained professional experience at the Rome office of ISTAT and at EUROSTAT in Luxembourg. Prior to my current position, I served as a fixed-term researcher (RTD-A) in Geography at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
My research interests are diverse and cover multiple geographical contexts. I am particularly engaged in energy studies, conducting European-level research on the geographical challenges associated with the current energy transition, with a focus on the socio-demographic profiles of populations residing in regions hosting renewable energy projects. I have a strong methodological interest in GIS applications, which I use to study territorial transformations through aerial photograph comparisons, collect georeferenced data via online tools, and produce thematic cartography. Recently, I have been exploring the use of GIS techniques for research in the humanities and archaeology.
I am also interested in border studies, focusing on the different opportunities offered by land and maritime borders, particularly regarding interactions and exchanges. My academic work further extends to mountain studies, where I analyze territorial imbalances between mountain regions and the rest of Italy, as well as disparities within mountain areas, using statistical indicators.
At the University of Udine, I am an Associate Professor of Geography, teaching Geografia (Geography) for the Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities and Geografia dei Luoghi e dei Paesaggi(Geography of Places and Landscapes) for the Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Heritage. Since October 2025, I have also served as Erasmus Coordinator for the Cultural Heritage program. I am affiliated with the Archaeology research section, where I collaborate with archaeology colleagues on territorial analysis and the management of georeferenced data. I participate in the NAUTA project (New Air-Underwater Technologies for Archaeology, PI: Massimo Capulli), which applies advanced technologies to detect archaeological artifacts in the Grado Lagoon (Northeastern Italy).
At the national level, I am a member of the Italian Geographical Society (Società Geografica Italiana), the Società di Studi Geografici, and AGEI (Associazione dei Geografi Italiani). Internationally, I am involved in the COST Action CA21125 – A European Forum for the Revitalisation of Marginalised Mountain Areas (MARGISTAR) and the COST Action CA24134 – Observatory of Innovative Strategies for Repurposing Terrain Vague (OBSERVISTA).
I am fluent in Portuguese, and my passion for the Lusophone world is reflected in both my teaching and research activities.
