The project aims to produce a census of the letters written and received by the brothers Lorenzo (1482–1549) and Filippo di Filippo Strozzi (1489–1538). The significance of this correspondence derives not only from the historical and literary importance of the two figures, but also from the extensive network of relationships they both established within the political, literary, and artistic context of early sixteenth-century Florence.
Objectives
Once the documents relevant to the research have been identified, each item will undergo autoptic examination in order to compile the census; at the same time, the process of digitising the documents will be initiated, in collaboration with the holding institution, which has formally expressed its willingness to participate in the project.
For each letter, the census will record the exact archival reference (current and former), the names of the sender and recipient, the place and date of dispatch, the autograph, idiograph, or apograph nature of the document (with identification of any writing delegates), and a brief summary of its contents.
Once the census has been completed, a critical and annotated edition of a selection of letters from Lorenzo’s correspondence will be prepared. These will be chosen from among the most significant documents and will undergo careful contextualisation, primarily from a linguistic, literary, and philological perspective.
Results
- Census of 2,450 letters, including the identification of senders and recipients (not always explicitly indicated), chronological and topographical dating (where not specified), the original structure of a substantial portion of the documents, and the various configurations they have assumed over the centuries.
- Preparation of a critical edition of a selection of 19 letters written by or addressed to Lorenzo Strozzi.
