Full Professor of "History of the Italian Language" at the University of Udine, Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage.
Completed university and advanced studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (1979–1986), receiving a Doctorate.
From 1987 to 1992 a tenured professor of Literary and Latin subjects at the "Alvise Cornaro" state high school in Padua.
In November 1992, Associate Professor of "Italian Linguistics" at the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
From November 1997 Associate Professor of "History of the Italian language" at the University of Udine, where from 1997 to 2001 taught "Romance Philology", re-employed for the academic year 2019–2020.
Since September 2000, a Full Professor of "History of the Italian language" at the same university.
In the two-year period 2011–2012 Director of the Department of Humanities at the University of Udine and a member of the UNIUD Academic Senate and University Research Commission.
Coordinator of the Italian Studies section and member of the Research Commission of the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage from 2016 to present.
Member of the Doctoral School Language and literary studies (interuniversity UNIUD and UNITS).
Member of the Evaluation Research Group in Humanities (areas 10–11) appointed by the ANVUR in July 2014.
Member of the National Commission for National Scientific Qualification for the functions of university professor of the 1st and 2nd class for the competition sector 10 / F3 "Italian Linguistics and Philology" for the period 2016-2018.

Since 2014 editor of the journal «Lingua e Stile» (Bologna, il Mulino; ANVUR: band A).
From 2002 to 2015 co-directed the magazine "Filologia italiana" (Pisa-Rome, F. Serra; ANVUR: band A).
Since 2015 directed the scientific series "Scrittori italiani e testi antichi" of the Accademia della Crusca (Florence, at the Academy) and "Quaderni delle Chartae Vulgares Antiquiores" (Rome, History and Literature Editions).

Scientific Director of the Udine research unit of the cofinancing PRIN 2001 and 2003 ("Historical vocabulary of Venetian dialects from the origins to the nineteenth century" project) .
National coordinator of the PRIN 2012 «Chartae Vulgares Antiquiores. The oldest Italo-Russian texts reproduced, edited and commented" (funded in March 2014).
In July 2017 Coordinator ("Principal Investigator"), a PRID funding ("Projects of relevant departmental interest") of 40,000 euros for a project entitled "Mercantile culture and commercial system in Venice between the 12th and 14th century".
In March 2019 the PRIN 2017 "Chartae Vulgares Antiquiores. The oldest Italo-Romance texts reproduced, published and commented" was refinanced, of which he is the national coordinator.

Ordinary member of the Accademia della Crusca (Florence, since 2013; member since 2003).
Member of the Galilean Academy (Padua, since November 2017).
Member of Arcadia, Italian Literary Academy (Rome, since 2011).
Member of the Commission for language texts (Bologna).
Resident partner of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti (Venice, from March 2019).
