The Laboratory stems from the need for more spaces to accomodate the excavating and surveying documentation collected during the archaeological missions of the University of Udine in Syria, more precisely in the sites of Tell Shiukh Fawqani/Burmarina, Mishrifeh/Qatna and Palmira, as well as in Irak, in the context of the Arcaheological Project Land of Niniveh, focused on the site of Tell Gomel. The lab houses in particular ceramic materials from Tell Shiukh Fawqani and Mishrifeh, which are also analysed. It is open to all students who want to take part in the excavation activities, in seminars and practical/theorical trainings dealing with the study and the classification of material pertaining to the field of Eastern Archaeology.
The lab offers also:
- annual workshops regarding the excavation campaigns and the geo-archaeological surveying activities carried out in Mishrifeh, in the western Palmyrene desert and in the Kurdistan region;
- ceramic drawing courses (both hand drawing and using the ceramigraph)
- excercises on recording and classifying archaeological materials, especially pottery
Available Equipment
- a ceramigraph for the computer drawing of pottery
Collaborations
- Qatna Archaeological Project, together with the University of Tübingen and the University of Damascus
- The Land of Niniveh Archaeological Project (LoNAP)
